Last week, one person voted in Fade Court. One. I’m choosing to see this as a very exclusive focus group.

This week we’re going back. Way back. Before denim. Before the mill. Before the jean.

Everything starts with a plant.

Today we begin a three-part series on the iconic blue. The pigment recognized the world over, and the one that gave blue jeans their name. We start at the beginning: the ancient history of indigo, and how this soulful hue traveled from a Peruvian burial site to the jeans in your closet.

THE BIG THREAD

The Color That Conquered Everything

Part One of Three: The History

It didn’t start with denim. It didn’t even start in America.

It started in a field. Thirty-four thousand years ago.

Stone tools found in a cave in the Caucasus foothills of Georgia (the country, not the state) were found to carry traces of a brilliant blue compound called indigotin. The tools are 32,000 to 34,000 years old. The researchers who found them aren’t entirely sure what those ancient humans were doing with it. Medicine, maybe. Decoration, possibly. But the blue was there, trapped in the rock, older than any civilization we’d recognize.

The earliest confirmed textile use comes later. A fragment of cotton fabric excavated at Huaca Prieta on the northern coast of Peru, dated at 6,000 years old. And the process wasn’t simple. It wasn’t an accident someone stumbled into. Ancient dyers fermented indigo leaves, used minerals from the earth to set the color, and layered the dye in passes to build depth. That 6,000-year-old scrap of cloth held its blue long enough to make it to a laboratory in 2016.

But the center of the indigo world for most of early recorded history was India. The Indigofera tinctoria plant thrived there in monsoon-soaked soil. Growing alongside food crops, between riverbanks, tended by farmers who knew exactly when to sow and when to harvest. Traces of blue dye have been found in the ancient sites of the Indus Valley Civilization, dating back more than 5,000 years.

The knowledge of how to pull color from those green leaves was closely guarded within families and passed down through generations. The dye was processed into hard cakes and sent along trade routes. Those cakes were so mysterious to the Europeans receiving them that they assumed they were minerals. They didn’t know they were getting ground-up leaves.

It traveled the Silk Road into Egypt, where it dyed the linen wrappings of mummies. It showed up in medieval Europe, where it was a luxury, controlled by Arab merchants who dominated the land routes from Asia, and Italian traders in Venice and Genoa who taxed it heavily on the European end. Blue was expensive. Blue meant power.

Then, in 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama found a sea route to India around the Cape of Good Hope. The Arab and Italian monopoly cracked. Real indigo flooded European markets. The luxury dye became a commodity, and the world's appetite for blue was about to grow beyond anything a field of plants could satisfy.

In the 1730s, a 16-year-old girl named Eliza Lucas Pinckney, was put in charge of three plantations outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Her father, a British military officer stationed in Antigua, shipped her seeds. She experimented. She failed. Multiple times. But by 1744, she had a successful indigo crop, and she shared the seeds with her neighbors.

Up to this point, Britain had relied on France for its indigo supply. Until King George’s war made that relationship impossible. Eliza Lucas's successful 1744 harvest might have remained a curiosity rather than launching an entire colonial industry, had there been no war.

By 1775, South Carolina was exporting over one million pounds of indigo dye annually to England. It became the colony’s second-largest cash crop after rice. Before the Revolutionary War, indigo accounted for more than a third of the total value of South Carolina’s exports.

When the war ended, the American colonies lost their British market overnight. Britain turned to India — a supplier it had known since the Silk Road — and the demand kept climbing. Back home, the cotton gin arrived, and planters followed the money. American indigo was finished by 1802.

But the demand for this rich, ancient blue never left.

The Gold Rush changed everything. Hundreds of thousands of workers flooded the American West. Miners, dockhands, railroad men. And they all needed durable workwear. In 1873, Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss patented the riveted work trouser. And they dyed it blue.

Why blue? Three reasons, and none of them were about aesthetics.

First, practicality. Dark blue hid dirt. Miners worked in it. Railroad men lived in it. A color that didn’t show filth after a week underground was a selling point, not a style choice. Second, availability. Indigo plants were locally grown and the dye was accessible. And third, crowd preference. Strauss experimented with other colors. The workers kept asking for blue. So blue it was.

The demand for blue kept climbing. And growing enough Indigofera plants to meet it was becoming impossible.

That’s why Adolf von Baeyer spent 30 years trying to build indigo in a lab.

His partner company, BASF, invested 18 million gold marks in the project. More than the company’s entire share capital. When they finally released synthetic “Indigo Pure” in 1897, the skepticism was so deep they had to hire an independent firm just to verify they’d actually done it. They had. By 1900, BASF’s factory output equaled the yield of 250,000 acres of Indigofera plants. By 1914, 95% of the world’s natural indigo had vanished from commercial production. A crop that had shaped economies for millennia was replaced in less than 20 years.

Same molecule. Different origin story. And the jeans kept getting bluer.

Why does this matter to Raleigh Denim? Because indigo isn’t just the color of our jeans. It’s the foundation of everything we believe about craft. We’ve always understood indigo’s original purpose: a living dye that transforms as you wear it, mapping your life onto the fabric thread by thread. Our proprietary raw denim, developed alongside Cone Mills White Oak before they closed their doors, pairs a deep, green-cast indigo warp with a tinted khaki weft yarn. Fresh off our vintage machines, it looks dark, sharp, and clean. But as you live in them, the starch and indigo slowly shed to reveal a buttery vintage blue that connects you to generations of American denim wearers. We don’t have much of the original White Oak fabric left. What remains gets cut into jeans one pair at a time. Our current spec, sourced from Japan, honors the same philosophy. A similar shade, a similar slow fade. But nothing will replicate what was made on those looms in Greensboro.

Understanding the history of indigo is understanding why we do this at all. We’re not selling you a pair of pants. We’re giving you a canvas to build your own history on.

DENIM MYTHBUSTERS

“Natural indigo fades better than synthetic.”

FALSE. They’re the same molecule. Chemically identical. The difference isn’t quality, it’s character.

Natural indigo fades slower, develops a green cast, softer tonal variation. Synthetic fades faster, redder, higher contrast. Neither is better. They’re just different stories told in blue.

The denim community romanticizes natural indigo because it’s rare and ancient. Fair. But “fades better” is a preference dressed up as a fact. Know the difference.

The First Comparison

Four weeks in. The Rookie has not quit.

This is notable. Week one: stiff jeans, loud complaints. Week two: pockets too small, louder complaints. Week three: the denim began to soften, and so did the Rookie. Getting in and out of the tractor got easier. The jeansmiths extended the pockets. Progress on all fronts.

But it’s summer south of the Mason Dixon. On a farm. In raw denim. Not ideal for the no-wash rule.

He’s thinking about a soak. Inside out, cold water, no dryer. We’re monitoring the situation.

In the meantime, we have our first comparison. Day 1 next to Month 1. Side by side. The jeans are developing their personality.

What we’re seeing: honeycombs forming behind the knees, faint but unmistakable, stacking exactly where the leg bends thousands of times a day on a farm. Whiskering across the thighs, radiating outward from the high-friction zones. Hem wear at the leg openings where the denim meets the ground first. The selvedge edge is holding. No fraying. Just honest wear.

Day 1 looked like a product. Month 1 looks like it belongs to someone.

You just have to know how to read them.

THE FADE REPORT - QUICK BITES

Four things worth knowing this week.

HISTORY When Mary Pickersgill sewed the Star-Spangled Banner in 1813, the blue starfield was dyed with indigo. The flag that inspired the national anthem and the dye that makes your jeans blue. Same thing.

TIP Fresh raw denim transfers indigo onto everything it touches. Car seats. Light furniture. Your partner’s white sofa. It fades with wear — but for the first few months, you are essentially a blue dye machine. Sit accordingly.

OBSCURE There is no laundry on the International Space Station. Astronauts wear their clothes until they can’t stand them anymore, then load them onto a cargo ship and incinerate them on reentry. The raw denim community’s approach to washing (resist as long as possible, then commit fully) turns out to be the most advanced textile protocol known to science. NASA just disposes of theirs instead.
